Cost of living

Costa Rica cost of living: build a realistic retirement budget

Costa Rica can be less expensive than some parts of North America and more expensive than newcomers expect. Your choices determine which version you experience.

01

Start with household assumptions

Any useful estimate needs a date, location, household size and lifestyle. Beach tourism zones, imported products, private healthcare and frequent driving can move the total quickly.

  • Rent and utilities
  • Groceries and eating out
  • Vehicle, fuel, maintenance and insurance
  • Public and private healthcare costs
  • Travel, household help and entertainment
  • Residency, professional and setup expenses
02

Housing changes the picture

The same rent can buy very different comfort, access and construction quality. Inspect ventilation, water pressure, noise, security, internet, road access and mold—not only square meters and views.

03

Build currency margin

If your income is in dollars and expenses are in colones, exchange-rate movement changes purchasing power. Use the Central Bank reference rate and leave margin rather than budgeting to the last dollar.

04

Compare lifestyles, not countries

Living like a tourist, recreating a U.S. lifestyle and participating in local routines produce different budgets. None is automatically wrong, but each should be priced honestly.

Planning note

Quoted prices age quickly. Verify current rents, insurance, utilities and transportation before deciding.

05

Compare a restrained and a higher-comfort version

Build two versions of your own budget. In the first, use a modest rental, home cooking and the transport you can realistically manage. In the second, include the conveniences you expect to miss: more eating out, imported foods, air conditioning, additional travel or paid help.

The difference shows which choices matter most. Do not compare your full U.S. budget with only rent and groceries in Costa Rica. Keep household size, insurance needs and annual travel consistent on both sides.

06

Keep moving costs separate

A recurring monthly budget does not pay for every arrival expense. Deposits, initial accommodation, document preparation, professional fees, household purchases and travel can cluster before you have a settled routine.

Create a one-time setup total and a monthly operating total. Then decide how long you can support a trial stay without needing every estimate to be right. If the plan works only at the lowest possible rent with no surprises, more research is needed.

07

A simple exchange-rate example

Illustration only: $2,000 converted at ₡500 per dollar gives ₡1,000,000. At ₡450, it gives ₡900,000. That is ₡100,000 less for the same dollar income. These are example rates, not a current quote.

A bank’s customer rate and fees can differ from a central-bank reference. Compare the amount actually received, and make sure you understand which expenses are denominated in dollars and which are in colones.

Common questions

Can I use someone else’s monthly budget?

Use it to identify categories, then replace the figures with current quotes for your household, location and lifestyle.

Are the exchange rates in the example current?

No. They are deliberately round illustrative rates showing how purchasing power changes. Use BCCR and your provider for current figures.
