Costa Rica nature and national parks: a resident’s planning guide

Enjoy the forests, volcanoes and coastlines while respecting access rules, local conditions and your own physical limits.

01

Plan each park individually

SINAC provides park information and reservation channels. Some visits use its online reservation system; other destinations have different procedures. Check the specific park’s official page rather than assuming one ticket system covers every site.

Before paying, confirm the date, entry sector, opening arrangements and any guide requirement. Read the cancellation conditions and save the confirmation. An old blog post is not a reliable source for current admission or access.

02

Choose experiences around your abilities

Ask about trail surface, steps, elevation change, distance, toilets and places to rest. “Easy walk” is subjective. The experience that works for an active visitor may not fit someone with reduced mobility or heat intolerance.

Include the journey to the entrance in the plan. A short trail can still involve a long or demanding drive. Ask the park or operator precise questions rather than relying on a general accessibility label.

03

Respect wildlife and protected places

Use marked routes and follow the instructions supplied by the park or guide. Treat animal encounters as observation rather than an invitation to approach or feed wildlife. Check the rules on food, pets and equipment for the specific destination.

Consider how your visit benefits the local community. Local guides and businesses can add understanding, but verify services and qualifications rather than assuming that a referral is an endorsement.

04

Living near nature has everyday tradeoffs

An isolated rental may bring quiet and views while increasing travel for groceries, repairs and appointments. Examine ventilation, screens, drainage and the maintenance responsibilities in the rental agreement.

Spend time at the property after rain and after dark. The goal is not to remove nature from daily life; it is to choose a setting you can enjoy and maintain comfortably throughout the year.
