Getting around Costa Rica

Getting around Costa Rica: airports, driving and daily transport

Choose transportation around your weekly needs, not just the journey from the airport to a rental.

01

Choose your airport around your destination

Juan Santamaría International Airport serves the San José area and is located in Alajuela Province. Daniel Oduber International Airport, commonly associated with Liberia and Guanacaste, serves the northwest. ICT describes both in its travel resources.

Compare the whole journey: flight schedule, arrival time, ground transport, overnight accommodation if needed and the trip back. A cheaper flight can be a poor fit if it creates a long or difficult transfer.

02

Can you live without a car?

That depends on the precise neighborhood, your mobility and the journeys you make. Being near a town does not tell you whether the route has sidewalks, safe crossings or a manageable slope.

During a trial stay, use your intended combination of walking, buses, taxis or other transport. Try groceries, an appointment and an evening activity. Record the cost, waiting time and what happens if the usual option is unavailable.

03

Driving requires a separate budget

A car budget includes more than fuel. Ask about insurance, maintenance, parking, annual charges and the cost of replacing a vehicle. For rentals, request a full written quote explaining required charges, coverage and the deposit.

Confirm current driving-document rules with the appropriate authority and rental company for your status. Do not assume an older travel article applies to your stay. This guide does not specify a universal foreign-licence validity period.

04

Test access in realistic conditions

Plan important journeys with room for traffic and weather disruption. Ask residents about alternate routes and use current route information. Avoid scheduling the only test of a route during a quiet midday period.

If an area depends on a ferry, domestic flight or infrequent service, check schedules and booking conditions with the operator. A connection that works for a holiday may not fit recurring healthcare or family travel.
