Banking in Costa Rica

Banking in Costa Rica: accounts, payments and money access

Build a reliable way to receive income and pay expenses before depending on a single account or card.

01

Requirements depend on the bank and product

Banco Nacional publishes account-opening requirements, including identification and requirements relating to immigration status when a passport is used. Its simplified-account terms distinguish eligible applicants and channels. Do not assume that every online product is available to every foreign applicant.

Ask the bank to identify a product appropriate for your status, transaction needs and documentation. Request the current checklist before an appointment so you know whether evidence of address, income or source of funds is needed.

02

Compare how you will actually use the account

An account is useful only if it supports the payments you need. Ask about incoming international transfers, transfer limits, customer-service language, fees, debit-card use and access when your phone or identification changes.

If you need both dollars and colones, clarify the currency of each account and what happens during conversion. Banco Nacional lists products in colones and dollars, but the right choice depends on your transaction pattern.

  • What fees apply to receiving and sending funds?
  • How are account limits increased?
  • Can I access support while outside Costa Rica?
  • How do I restore access after losing my phone?
03

Understand the exchange rate you receive

A BCCR reference rate is useful for comparison. The amount you actually receive depends on the institution’s rate and fees. BCCR also publishes rates announced by financial institutions.

Compare the final amount received for the same transfer, not only a headline fee. Keep a record of the date, currency and charges so you can repeat the comparison accurately.

04

Build a backup before you need one

Test a small transfer before relying on a larger one. Maintain more than one practical payment method while you establish local arrangements. Keep provider contact information separately from your phone.

Never share a password, one-time code or banking credential with someone offering relocation help. For taxation, reporting obligations or movement of substantial funds, obtain advice from qualified professionals familiar with your circumstances.
